Spring Design Community Meeting

AIGA DFW Community Meetings, held the first Thursday of each quarter, are free and open to everyone in the local design community. You'll hear updates on chapter happenings, learn how you can make an impact, gain valuable insights on the changing face of design from two speakers, and have an opportunity to share your own news and questions during our open floor.

Our keynote for the evening:

Re-think Your Design Work: 10 Ways to Build Sustainability into Your Processes

from Design to Renourish authors Eric Benson and Yvette Perullo

5 Ways We're Reimagining the Way People Interact with Design

from AIGA UTA Student Group President Ana Ponce

Eric Benson is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Illinois where he researches design utopias and dystopias. He was awarded a BFA in Graphic & Industrial Design from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Design from the University of Texas. Between those degrees, Eric worked in UI/UX, branding, and print design. His thesis at the University of Texas became the sustainable design resource for the nonprofit www.re-nourish.org. His research led him to co-found Fresh Press Agri-Fiber Paper Lab in 2012 to explore the viability of sustainable local plant fibers in paper and packaging. Benson has published and lectured internationally on the importance of sustainable design, and his work has garnered numerous design awards and been seen in venues including The Walker Art Center, Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Hammer Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and RISD.

Yvette Perullo is a Boston-based designer, educator, and author. She is an Assistant Professor of Communication Design at Massachusetts College of Art + Design and lead creative at Bartlett Interactive, an agency with a commitment to sustainability and triple bottom line business practices. She has lectured internationally about sustainable design and her work has received numerous awards. Yvette is co-founder and partner at Re-nourish, an independent nonprofit organization that provides resources and tools to help advocate awareness and action for sustainable graphic design. Yvette and Eric Benson’s book Design to Renourish: Sustainable Graphic Design in Practice addresses the real life challenges of working with clients to create responsible solutions by outlining various approaches, pitfalls, and real-world case studies.

Ana Ponce is the President of the AIGA UTA Student Group. She is a creator who enjoys design problem solving, and opportunities to combine graphic design and illustration. She likes to think that creativity thrives with constraints, and that you cannot unravel inspiration without aiming to answer questions and solve problems.
