Join AIGA Dallas for an inspiring presentation and hands-on workshop led by Evan Gerdes, a University of Texas at Dallas graduate with a BA in English and a minor in Creative Writing. A former teacher and current small business owner in Collin County, Evan is also an independent zine publisher through Recluse Books in Fort Worth.
The session begins with an engaging introduction to zines—independent, self-published works that allow creators to share writing, art, and ideas outside the constraints of traditional publishing. Through a short lecture and discussion, Evan will explore the current publishing landscape and highlight how zines empower artists and writers with creative freedom, authenticity, and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with niche audiences.
Following the talk, participants will jump into a hands-on zine-making workshop, creating their own mini publication using provided materials. You’ll learn simple techniques for folding, binding, and assembling zines while experimenting with a creative theme. The workshop concludes with an opportunity to share or trade zines, embracing the collaborative and community-driven spirit of zine culture.
We’ll also have fun refreshments available, so you can connect with fellow creatives and enjoy a relaxed, inspiring afternoon.
