Doing design work for non- profits should be a part of every
designer's agenda, but many times the work is done for ulterior
motives (creative freedom, cool paper, award-winning- client-free
work).
Non-Profits must rely on those willing to donate their
time and effort, for without it their materials sometimes indicate a
less than accurate view of the organization. Bringing this topic
into discussion helps both non-profits and creatives fulfill
their agendas; obtaining a professional level work for non-profits and creating a pseudo-agency learning experience.
Discussions include how difficult this concept can be (design by
committee, budgets, actual timelines, client changes), but more
important to the future of graphic design, how to take the lead
in a design role, not sitting back and waiting for someone to
approach you to do work "when you have time," which changes the model of pro bono work that exists currently.
